Our
custom made flintlocks are mostly crafted for 17th
Century re-enactments and displays.
We
at Derbyshire Arms, use the early style English Locks and
the later styled Doglock on our pieces, although we can hand
craft Flintlocks for any era.
The
invention of the Flintlock can be traced back to a specific
time period 1610 – 1615 and although there’s no concrete
proof the evidence points to Marin le Bourgeoys, a
descendant of skilled craftsmen as its initiator.
Like
most French gunsmiths of the time, he was familiar with
Miquelets and Snaphaunces and his vision was to combine the
two into a hybrid which became known as the Flintlock.
This
gun then eclipsed the Matchlock and became the standard
military issued firearm, it dispensed with the need for a
lighted match and the expense of the contemporary Wheellock.
This
change took time but by 1700 the major powers had taken on
board the Flintlock musket.
The
Jacobean or English Lock is available in two standard
versions, the first is suitable for pistol, carbine or
musket and the second larger lock is suitable for carbine
and musket stocks.
Both
locks operate on the protruding sear principle and
horizontal acting sear lever as on the original English
locks.
We
at present manufacture two versions of the Doglock
mechanism, a smaller version for pistols and a larger one
for longer arms, these locks utilise the later vertical sear
typical of the true Flintlock.
Both
still retain the Dogcatch safety.
